The pulping process
Pulp is a dry fibrous material consisting mainly of cellulose from wood or other fibre crops. Fibres are separated from the wood by mechanical or chemical processes in the pulping process.
Chemical processes need much more process chemicals than mechanical processes and different chemicals are needed in different parts of the processes: for example digester aids are added with the cooking chemicals to the digester; flocculants / emulsion breakers can be added to tall oil separation; defoamers are used especially in the washing and dewatering stages; deposit control is used in digester; washing and bleaching.
