Adding water resistance

Insolublizers

The water sensitivity of paper and board coating originates from the fact that water-soluble binders tend to loose their binding power in contact with water and dissolve. There are many chemically different types of insolubilizers or crosslinkers, but they all have the same function - to add water resistance to the finished coated paper or board.

Water resistance is particularly important in offset printing. In double-coated boards, crosslinkers are used in the pre-coating to impart water resistance against the topcoat. Commonly used insolubilizers are glyoxal, glyoxal-urea resins and zirconium based products such as ammonium zirconium carbonate and potassium zirconium carbonate.
